The Role: Driver-Porter

Location: Cranleigh, Surrey (covering Surrey, Hampshire, West Sussex)Salary: £26,000–£28,000 per year (base)

OTE: £30,000–£35,000 with overtime

Hours: Monday–Friday, 8am–4:30pm. Hours will vary due to type of job.  (occasional Saturdays available)

Employment Type: Part time to Full-time, permanent

What You’ll Be Doing

As a driver-porter, you’ll be the face of Ashley Removals on moving day. You’ll drive our Luton vans, handle customers’ belongings with care, and make sure every move runs smoothly from start to finish.

Day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Drive company Luton vans (500 cu ft) to customer properties across Surrey and beyond

  • Load and unload household items safely, using protective covers, blankets, and proper techniques

  • Provide friendly, professional customer service during what’s often a stressful day for clients

  • Follow our detailed pre-move inspection and quality control protocols

  • Work as part of a small, close-knit team

  • Handle furniture, boxes, and specialist items (pianos, antiques) with care and attention

  • Navigate tight spaces, stairs, and tricky access points

  • Communicate clearly with customers and the team throughout the day


What We’re Looking For

Essential Requirements

Clean UK driving licence (we’ll check—no major points or bans)

Physical fitness and stamina (lifting, carrying, stairs all day)

Reliable and punctual (one no-show kills a job—this is non-negotiable)

Customer-facing skills (polite, calm under pressure, reassuring)

Problem-solving ability (think on your feet when things don’t go to plan)

Honest and trustworthy (you’ll be in people’s homes with their valuables)

Nice-to-Haves (But We Can Train You)

  • Previous removals or logistics experience

  • Knowledge of Surrey roads and surrounding areas

  • Experience with manual handling or physical work

  • Customer service background (hospitality, retail, trades)

  • Experience in driving large Luton vans

FAQs

Do I need removals experience? No. We’d rather hire someone smart and reliable who we can train properly than someone with bad habits from another company.

What’s the physical demand like? It’s hard work—lifting, carrying, stairs, being on your feet all day. But if you’re reasonably fit and willing to learn proper techniques, you’ll be fine.

Will I be driving long distances? Mostly local (Surrey, Hampshire, West Sussex), but occasional national moves. You’ll know your schedule in advance. Nights away on long distance jobs.

What if I damage something? We do have full insurance (up to £25,000) but you’ll be expected not to damage anything in your training. You’ll be trained in our protection protocols—quilted covers, blankets, proper loading. Accidents happen, but they’re rare if you follow the process.

Can I work part-time or flexible hours? This is a full-time role. Hours are mainly Monday–Friday, 8am–4:30pm, with occasional Saturday work (paid extra).

What’s the team culture like? Small, tight-knit, no drama. We work hard, treat customers well, and look after each other and have a laugh along the way.
